Thus, AP shells can absolutely murder carriers in no time, much faster than HE.Armor in World of Warships is not just a uniform barrier to be pierced (like in World of Tanks), but rather a kind of multi-layered “cake” that covers a number of construction elements and mechanisms, each having specific armoring. They have armor thin enough that AP can easily penetrate, and they are generally big enough that AP shells don't over-penetrate them like destroyers. Small note, carriers are an interesting case regarding AP shells. Fire HE at carriers when you need them on fire, and unable to launch aircraft. I shoot HE at destroyers because AP shells from anything will just over-penetrate a destroyer. I shoot HE at battleships while in cruisers because fires will do more damage than AP shells from cruisers ever will( also the fact that cruiser AP can't pen battleship belt armor). I shoot HE in my battleship when the enemy battleship is too well angled for my AP shells to have a chance of penetrating. HE is for when AP would not be effective, you want to cause module damage, or start fires. If a battlship has been heavily damaged, and cruiser HE is dong little damage, switch to AP and fire at the battleship's bow, cruiser AP shells can penetrate the armor at the bow and do decent damage. I can even use AP shells in a destroyer when I am shooting at carriers, and IJN cruisers(close range, broadside on) and some USN cruisers such as the Omaha and the Pensacola. In my Cleveland, I am able to make good use of AP shells when enemy ships are sailing broadside to me. This doesn't mean that only battleships can effectively use AP shells. AP is for when you know you have a decent chance of penetrating the opponent's armor.
